When it comes to football equipment, the vast majority of products you will find for sale, both online and in retail stores, are dedicated to safety. Equipment helps keep safe the players who are wearing it, and helps them keep their teammates and competition safe as well. From helmets to pads (and the many varieties of pads available), here is an overview of safety focused football equipment, and the purpose each type serves.

  1. Helmet. This is the most obvious and arguably the most important piece of safety equipment for a football player to wear. Any player who enters the field should always be wearing a helmet. This is to protect the head in several ways. First of all, it protects players in the lineup from experiencing head trauma when the play starts and they rush forward, head first, against the other players. It also helps pad the head from all angles if the player falls, trips, or hits the ground from being tackled. (Helmet accessories such as a chin strap, mouth guard, etc. also play a large role in helping the helmet work even better.)
  2. Upper body Protection. In football equipment, there is quite a bit of padding and other protective devices aimed specifically at keeping the upper body safe. Due to the nature of the game, it is very easy for one to get a twisted neck, scraped elbow, or even crushed rib if they do not have proper equipment. Examples of gear aimed at protecting the body are elbow pads, rib pads, shoulder pads, gloves, neck rolls, mouth guards, etc.
  3. Leg protection. This is the third major area of football equipment, as far as safety goes. You will notice that football players are already large people, but they look even bulkier on the field, and this is because they wear so much padding. Besides pants and shoes, most of the equipment that is leg protection is comprised of padding. There is specific padding for the hips, knees, thighs, and rear. An athletic cup is also an important piece of safety football equipment for males.
